About this work
Hans Arp’s plaster sculptures were mostly conceived as models for later reproduction in stone, marble or bronze, either in the same dimensions or scaled up in size. These latter works were only produced as finances permitted, through sales or commissions. The original plasters were never intended for sale themselves, but retained as three-dimensional records of the artist’s practice. Arp seldom carved the stone or marble versions of his sculptures himself, subcontracting this task to specialised craftsmen. He worked collaboratively with several professional foundries to cast the bronze editions of his sculptures.
