About this work
The Djaŋ’kawu – the Dhuwa moiety Creator Beings, in naming Dhambit Munungurr’s Country for the Dhudi Djapu, her community, created sacred freshwater spring fed waterholes by plunging sacred digging sticks into the ground. Fresh water sprung from these new wells, as did a sacred goanna, an event described as a manifestation of the Djaŋ’kawu Creator Beings. This work by Munungurr traces the journey of a goanna, surfacing to see the first sunrise. Munungurr depicts the footprints of Daŋgultji (Brolga) left from their gathering on the wet clays around the wells. Ḏulk is part of the songs of the Daŋgultji connected to Munungurr Country, meaning to rise or run.
