About this work
William ‘Quaker’ Pegg is regarded as oneof the finest natural flower painters in the field of ceramic decoration. The son of a gardener, he began his apprenticeship at the age of ten and by thirteen had become an accomplished flower painter on earthenware bodies. In 1796 he joined the Derby manufactory where he spent five years working as one of the company’s top porcelain painters before leaving due to religious reasons, Pegg having become a Quaker. Nevertheless, Pegg returned to Derby in 1813 and worked for a further seven years, producing some of his finest works during this period.
