About this work
It was after a dream in 1954 that Jasper Johns first painted an image of the American flag. This inspired a series of emblematic images such as targets, numbers and alphabets. Johns used such recognisable symbols because they could almost be treated as abstract designs, allowing him to concentrate on mark making and the formal compositional aspects of his work. Johns and partner Robert Rauschenberg were credited with reintroducing figurative subject matter into painting and inspiring the transition of Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art.
