About this work
Samuel Richardson had previously commissioned a set of engravings to illustrate the second edition of his novel Pamela. Although Highmore’s far more compelling prints were produced without Richardson’s permission or financial involvement, the author greatly admired the artist’s visualisation of his story, and the two became close friends.
