About this work
In Pamela greets her father, Highmore depicts a scene from Samuel Richardson’s novel in which Squire B., now determined to marry Pamela, summons her father to prove his honourable intentions. In the novel, Pamela narrates: ‘My master bid Mrs Jewkes [the housekeeper] not to let me know my father was come … So I came down … I gave a spring, overturned the table without regard to the company, and threw myself at his feet.’ Highmore exhibited twelve preparatory paintings in his home to attract interest and financial support for his then forthcoming print series, four of which are held in the NGV Collection.
