About this work

Following the First World War, many artists were exploring and commenting on the notion of humans being likened to machines. With Abstract sculpture, Joseph Csáky took the metaphor to its extreme. Csáky sought to represent the human form in a reductionist way, which he expressed by combining basic geometric structures. A columnar work of cones, cylinders, discs and spheres piled in a flowing conglomeration, Abstract sculpture is a strikingly light and airy work, despite its overt references to mechanical forms.
