About this work

Henry Moore is widely regarded as one of Britain’s most significant sculptors of the twentieth century. This lithograph, based on a 1972 drawing of the same title, showcases Moore’s distinctive sculptural lexicon. In his figures, Moore explored the formal connections between the human body and the landscape, often drawing inspiration from natural forms like weathered tree trunks. He was also inspired by ancient Egyptian and pre-Columbian sculpture. The reclining pose of the Mesoamerican Chacmool sculpture, emulated here in the upper-right figure, was the most significant influence on Moore’s early work and remained a recurring motif throughout his career.
