About this work
Towards the end of the First World War Henri Matisse found a haven in Nice, in the south of France. He had just resumed painting the human form after several years devoted principally to landscapes and still lifes. The new works were dark in palette and mood compared to his works from before the war, which were characterised by exuberant colour. During Matisse’s early years in Nice he painted a number of odalisque-like works of his model Antoinette Arnoux. Reclining nude is an intimate study of Antoinette asleep.
