About this work
Along with Adriaen Brouwer (1605/6–1638), David Teniers the younger is credited with transforming Flemish genre painting from the stylised scenes by Jan BruegelII and the flamboyant manner of Rubens to naturalistic portrayals of peasant life. His landscapes and interiors are painted in muted tones, and he captured still-life details and costumes with uncanny exactitude, lending his paintings a sense of authenticity that borders on reportage. An immensely popular artist, Teniers became an important teacher at the Antwerp Academy and was prominent at the Spanish Habsburg court in Brussels. His profound influence can be seen in later Flemish and Dutch genre painting.
