About this work
In April 1924 Lucien Pissarro moved to the town of La Frette on the river Seine. He wrote, ‘Well the hen has found the nest, but the eggs are still to come – the nest is to be at La Frette, a village not far from Paris – a charming place with hills covered with lilacs, the river banks are charming, on the whole very paintable’. In this period Pissarro’s style became flatter and more economical, and his pigments drier. By mid July he was outside painting every day in the summer heat. Pissarro subtitled this painting Grey, in reference to the cooler light.
