About this work
One of Albrecht Dürer’s favourite saints, Jerome is here depicted during his years living in isolation, kneeling before a crucifix and beating his chest with a stone, accompanied by his faithful lion. The image of St Jerome as a penitent was imported by Dürer from Italy, the Northern European tradition being to show the saint removing the thorn from the lion’s paw, or as a scholar in his study, both scenes that Dürer also depicted.
