About this work
A former student of the National Gallery School, Frederick McCubbin was appointed Drawing Master of the School of Design in 1886, a position he held until his death in 1917. McCubbin’s progressive approach – based on European concepts of modern art, such as en plein-air (in the open air) painting methods – made him popular with the students. Old stables was painted shortly before his appointment at the Gallery School and depicts part of the McCubbin family bakery in King Street, Naarm/Melbourne, a popular subject and backdrop in the artist’s early works.
