About this work
The Classical amphora form of this vase is ornamented with oriental and Japanese-inspired decoration – an example of the Minton manufactory’s ability to elegantly combine form and decoration from distinct cultural sources in one work. It is decorated in the pâte-sur-pâte technique, a method of building up decorative details with layers of slip, perfected at Mintonby Marc-Louis Solon and practised with great success by his student Charles Toft. The decorative aesthetic of the vase, including stylised floral arrangements, a background of formal trellis patterning and the use of the half-sunflower motif on the shoulder all make reference to the Aesthetic Movement.
