Exploring Kimono for Primary Students

Mon–Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm

Discover the beauty and creativity of the kimono, one of Japan’s most famous and much-loved forms of clothing. In this interactive introductory tour through the exhibition, students will join an NGV educator to explore how kimono are made and worn, and the stories behind their designs. Students will learn how artists and designers have created kimono for different people, occasions, and times in history, as well as how kimono continue to inspire fashion today.

Through stories, discussion, and close looking, students will explore the shapes, colours, patterns and symbolic meanings behind kimono and related artworks.

Students will:

  • Identify key features and designs used in traditional and contemporary kimono.
  • Discuss how kimono can be used to express ideas about identity, status, and cultural traditions.
  • Describe how materials, patterns, and techniques are used to create kimono.

Students must be supervised at all times by a teacher or adult. We request:
• At least one teacher/adult for every 20 students for students in Year 2 or above.
• At least one teacher/adult for every 15 students for K to Year 1 students.

Please provide details of any relevant themes and skills your students are learning about at school. While we cannot offer individually tailored programs, our museum educators will consider this information when selecting and discussing works of art during the program.

We recommend you provide three date options for your program to avoid disappointment. We will do our best to accommodate your first preference, however due to high demand this may not always be possible.
