French Impressionism for Secondary Students

What are the origins of French Impressionism? Who were the key figures and what ideas and subjects were important to them? How did their art differ from the work of earlier artists? This interactive, discussion introduces the key themes in French Impressionism, and includes an analysis and discussion of the influences, techniques and materials in selected works.

Self-guided entry into the exhibition will follow the interactive presentation.

Students will:

  • Identify key historical, cultural and social events that contributed to the development of French Impressionism
  • Discuss how the French Impressionists used materials, techniques and processes to realise their intentions in their artworks
  • Analyse and interpret themes and ideas in French Impressionist artworks and discuss how they are expressed using the art elements and principles

Duration: 45 mins plus self-guided time in the exhibition
