Introduction to Kimono for Secondary Students

Mon–Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm
Levels 7–VCE
NGV International

Discover the rich history of kimono, one of Japan’s most iconic and internationally recognised garments. In this NGV educator-led session, students will explore the kimono’s transformation from a traditional item of dress to a powerful source of inspiration in contemporary fashion and design. Through viewing and discussing key works in the exhibition Kimono, students will examine how artists and designers have adapted the kimono’s forms, materials, and decorative techniques to express identity, status, and cultural values both within Japan and globally.

Through the analysis of selected highlight works, students will consider the lasting impact of the kimono on international fashion, textiles, and visual culture, and reflect on how kimono continues to inspire creative practices today.

Students will:

  • Analyse and interpret how kimono designs communicate ideas of cultural identity, status, and style.
  • Discuss how materials, techniques, and processes are used in traditional kimono-making and how contemporary designers reimagine them.
  • Investigate the influence of the kimono on global fashion, textile design, and visual culture.

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $21 per student
