Introduction to Kimono for Tertiary Students

Mon-Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm
Level Tertiary
NGV International

Explore the artistry, history, and cultural significance of the kimono, one of Japan’s most recognisable and enduring forms of dress. Learn about the evolution of the kimono and its presence in contemporary fashion, art, and global pop culture. Through close examination of selected key works from the exhibition, students will investigate the transformation of kimono across time, the intersection between tradition and innovation, and its global influence. The session will also introduce students to curatorial considerations in presenting kimono within an art museum context, including display methods, conservation, and cultural considerations.

Students will:

  • Analyse and interpret the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of kimono and other works from the exhibition.
  • Identify the global influence of kimono on contemporary fashion and art.
  • Discuss how curatorial considerations inform the presentation of art works in the exhibition.

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $38 per student
