Nihongo de Kimono

Mon–Fri, 10am, 11.30am, 1pm & 2.30pm
All levels
NGV International

This NGV educator-led session, developed specifically for Japanese language students, invites students to explore the cultural significance and design of highlight works in the Kimono exhibition. Through close looking, discussion, and language-based activities, students will explore how kimono have evolved over time, from traditional garments worn by Japanese aristocrats and samurai to contemporary fashion statements with global influence. Students will also view and discuss related artworks such as paintings, prints, and textiles that reveal Japan’s cultural history and traditions.

This program will be tailored to the language level of the students.

Students will:

  • Use spoken or written Japanese to identify, describe, and discuss key artworks and design elements in Kimono.
  • Explore how ideas, beliefs, and cultural practices are reflected through the design, materials, and uses of kimono.
  • Reflect on intercultural experiences and compare aspects of Japanese art and culture with their own identities and communities.

Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $21 per student
