French Impressionism is a major exhibition developed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria. The exhibition charts the trajectory of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in late nineteenth-century France, highlighting the renowned avant-garde artists at the centre of this period of radical experimentation, who boldly rejected the artistic conventions of their time.
Drawn from MFA Boston’s rich collection of Impressionist masterworks, French Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston presents more than 100 paintings by key figures including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Paul Signac and Alfred Sisley. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the hallmarks of Impressionism: distinctive brushwork, vivid use of colour, innovative viewpoints, and depictions of subjects and places dear to the artists.

The exhibition features French Impressionist paintings and some prints from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This nineteenth-century art movement is known for its loose brushwork, bright colors, and focus on capturing light and everyday moments.
Where possible, we encourage teachers to visit the Gallery prior to visiting with a group to plan a route and to review the works on display.

Visiting an exhibition such as French Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston provides students with unique, immersive, and experiential learning opportunities. Rather than writing activities, consider providing students with prompts that promote close looking and discussion and help students make connections and express personal observations and interpretations. See the teacher resources for the exhibition on the NGV website for some starting points.
Pencils are permitted in the exhibition if students do need to take brief notes. Photography without a flash is also permitted.
While exhibition visitation times may vary for each school group, we recommend allowing at least 60 minutes to experience the exhibition.
