John Brack’s Collins St, 5p.m voted Victoria’s favourite work of art!

John Brack’s painting Collins St, 5p.m.  (pictured) has been voted the most popular work in the National Gallery of Victoria’s Collection, in the My Top Ten competition.

Dr Gerard Vaughan, Director, NGV said: “I’m delighted in the NGV’s 150th year that such an iconic Melbourne work has been chosen as the most popular from our entire Collection.

“Purchased by the Gallery in 1956, Collins St, 5p.m. has represented life in Melbourne for over half a century and clearly resonates with Victorians today,” said Dr Vaughan.

Collins St, 5p.m. is followed by Camille Pissarro’s Boulevard Montmartre morning, cloudy, weather, Max Dupain’s Sunbaker, Katsushika Hokusai’s The great wave off Kanagawa and Picasso’s Weeping Woman.

Completing the ten most popular works are Mark Rothko’s no. 37 (Red), August Friedrich Albrecht Schenck’s

Anguish, Frederick McCubbin’s The Pioneer, Ron Mueck’s Two women and Giambattista Tiepolo’s The Banquet of Cleopatra.

Four Australian and six international works make up the My Top Ten, including painting, photography, print and sculpture. Over 8000 votes were received.

Andrew Rigby was today announced as the grand prize winner of the competition. He will enjoy a ten course degustation dinner for himself and ten friends in the Great Hall at the NGV.  The menu will be masterminded by world renowned Chef Philippe Mouchel from PM24 and Terry Clark from Peter Rowland Catering.  Each of the ten courses will be inspired by the works that make up the My Top Ten.

The ten most popular works will form part of a special NGV 150 self-guided trail which will be launched on the NGV 150 pARTy weekend on 28–29 May 2011 and is free for all to enjoy! Each of the My Top Ten works on display will be accompanied by a special NGV 150 wall label including a selection of comments and personal responses made by voters.
