What's On

Host – Sharon Johal

Indian Community Day will be hosted by multitalented Indian Australian actor and creative, Sharon Johal. A strong advocate for community, arts, interiors and fashion, Johal has graced screens on beloved TV shows including The Twelve, Neighbours, The Block and Shantaram.

Indian Drumming

Experience the electrifying rhythm of a traditional dhol performance as talented Indian dholis bring the Gallery to life with their dynamic beats.

DJ sets by Karan

DJ Karan will get the dance floor going with a fusion of contemporary chart-toppers and golden hits from across India – his sets weaving together vibrant rhythms and nostalgic melodies to celebrate the rich diversity of India’s musical heritage.

Masala Bhangra fitness class – Naki Khan

Warm up with a Masala Bhangra fitness class led by dancer Naki Khan. The Indian version of Zumba, Masala Bhangra incorporates simple choreography from Bhangra and Bollywood dance styles to create movement activities for people of all ages.

Karma Dance

With a track record of sell-out performances and festival appearances, Karma Dance will ignite the sights and sounds of India with a contemporary dance performance followed by a special pop-up performance at 3.25pm.

Dance Battle – Studio J & Sapphire Dance

What’s your favourite Indian dance style? Glimpse moves from across the subcontinent as dancers from Sapphire Dance & teachers from Indian dance academy, Studio J, face off in styles ranging from Bollywood, Bhangra to Kathak & Bharatanatyam.

Then join us at 3.45pm for a special Bollywood pop-up peformance.

Bansuri – Vinod Prasanna

Explore the NGV Collection of Indian art whilst listening to the soothing melodies of the Indian flute, known as the bansuri, played by Vinod Prasanna, a descendant of one of India’s greatest flute playing families.

Draw amongst artworks in the NGV Collection and create a portrait of a special person in your life with South Asian artist and educator Swathi Madike in this workshop for all ages.

In this discussion, SBS Hindi Executive Producer Preeti Jabbal invites three local creatives to share the history and craftsmanship behind their treasured objects, and how these pieces connect them to culture and place.
