Come and be part of a day filled with vibrant art, captivating dance, delicious food, dynamic music and free activities for the whole family at the National Gallery of Victoria.

What's On

Host Sharon Johal

Indian Community Day will be hosted by multitalented Indian-Australian actor and creative, Sharon Johal. A strong advocate for the arts and fashion, Johal has graced screens on beloved TV shows including The Twelve, Neighbours, The Block and Shantaram.

Indian Drumming
1.15–1.30pm, Federation Court

Enjoy a vibrant and high-impact dhol performance as Indian dholis lead you through the Gallery. Please note increased sound levels for this activity.

DJ SETS BY PRADIP SARKAR
11am–12.30pm & 3.15–5pm, Great Hall

Catch DJ Pradip Sarkar, host of PBS Radio’s Tiger Beats and Elephant Grooves, when he transforms the Great Hall into a dance floor with his sets of contemporary music from South Asia.

KATHAK DANCE PERFORMANCE
1.30–2pm, Great Hall

Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Northern India as dancers from Manmohini Indian Dance School present a rhythmic dance performance accompanied by live tabla and sitar music.

RAJASTHANI & GUJARATI FOLK DANCE
2–2.30pm, Great Hall

In a vibrant fusion of culture, performances inspired by Rajasthani Ghoomar and Gujarati Garba dance combine for a dynamic presentation with intricate footwork, lively beats and colourful swirling movements.

BOLLYWOOD DANCE PERFORMANCE AND WORKSHOP
2.30–3pm, Great Hall

Ignite Bollywood takes the stage for a Bollywood medley dance performance, blending iconic moves from classic to contemporary hits followed by a dance workshop for all ages.

Explore Indian Art

INDIAN FASHION DISCUSSION
12.30–1.15pm, Great Hall

Explore how tradition and culture has influenced the contemporary designs of Indian fashion designers Abha Gupta and Kudrat Makkar in this engaging discussion led by SBS Radio Host Preeti Jabbal. Feel free to join in on the festivities and wear your best sari, kurta or traditional outfit to celebrate.

ASIA IN FOCUS – GALLERY TOUR
2pm & 3.15pm, Meet Level 1

Uncover contemporary highlights from the NGV Asian Art collection in these curator-led tours and discover how artists are using traditional materials, techniques and philosophies in new and exciting ways.

DRAWING ACTIVITY WITH BUSHRA HASAN
11am–4pm, EXHIBITION SPACE, LEVEL 2

Drop by and draw a rickshaw in this creative activity led by artist Bushra Hasan in the inspiring surrounds of the Level 2 International Art Galleries. Everyone is welcome to join in and draw together.

Food & Drink

Indian flavours

A range of Indian inspired dishes are available to purchase on the day. Indulge in delicious chai, fenugreek fries, murgh makhani, chena poda and more from the Great Hall, with a selection of items available from Gallery Kitchen.

Enter via Laundry

Enjoy a bespoke menu of Indian dishes and snacks created especially for Indian Community Day by chef Helly Raichura of the much sought-after Indian eatery, Enter via Laundry, in the Great Hall and Gallery Kitchen. Raichura has appeared as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia, co-hosted the TV cooking series India Unplated alongside Adam D’Sylva and Sandeep Pandit, and appears regularly as a guest chef for The Cook Up with Adam Liaw.

Indian Community Day is held at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
