While painting always remained important for Pierre Bonnard, he later recalled how in the early 1890s ‘I wanted personally to make things that would be both popular and practical: prints, furniture, fans, screens, etc’.
His ambition in these areas was supported when he met the Natanson brothers, who had taken control of the journal La Revue blanche and were looking for artists who could represent and promote its brand.
NGV Senior Curator Dr Ted Gott along with special guest Cecile McNamara-Plaa of Alliance Française de Melbourne discuss Bonnard’s ventures in advertising and interior design under the patronage of the Natanson brothers in the mid-1890s.
