Melbourne Design week Join RMIT University’s Design Lecturers, Dr. Noel Waite and Marius Foley in a collection viewing of the Alexander Stitt archive. Stitt (1937 – 2016) a graphic designer, writer, animator and illustrator, was best known for community service work produced in collaboration with Phillip Adams, at that time a principal of the Monahan Dayman Adams advertising agency.

Stitt was responsible for every character and image produced for the Life. Be in it’ campaign, which ran from 1975 until 1992. Designed to improve Australians’ health through increasing participation in physical and social activities, ‘Life. Be in it’ proved that social norms could indeed be changed by media campaigns.

Ironically, Norm, the fat and friendly couch potato who knew everything and did nothing became the campaign’s anti-hero by stalwartly ignoring its message to ‘Live more of your life.’ Another popular and long-lived Stitt character was Sid the dancing seagull, star of the Slip! Slop! Slap! which Stitt animated for Monahan Dayman Adams and its client, the Anti Cancer Council.

Noel Waite and Marius Foley will discuss his legacy, explore the archives of the Alexander Stitt archive in the RMIT Design Archives collection.
