Buddhism encompasses a variety of beliefs, philosophies and spiritual practices and its importance in Asian culture is reflected in the art that has been produced. What are the origins and principles of Buddhism and how are these reflected in art and the modern mindfulness movement?
Marking Buddha’s birthday, Senior Lay Teacher Sandeep Karki provides a brief introduction to the principles of Buddhism followed by a short tour of works in the NGV Collection with Wayne Crothers, Senior Curator of Asian Art.
Following the tour, Sandeep Karki leads a virtual guided meditation from the NGV’s Asian Art Collection.

Sandeep Karki is Senior Lay Teacher at the Buddhist Society of Victoria. Sandeep was born in Nepal and came to know about Buddhism while attending a University in California in 1998. In 2000, Sandeep was ordained as a Buddhist monk and was in the robe for 6 Vassa. After leaving the monastic order, outside his day job, Sandeep has been teaching meditation and providing spiritual counselling along Buddhist principle in prison, temples, clubs, drug rehabilitation centre and homes of friends.
Wayne Crothers is Senior Curator of Asian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). He was the lead curator of the 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitions Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality and Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape, and most recently Japanese Modernism. He lived in Japan for more than eighteen years and has researched extensively on Chinese, Indian and South-East Asian art. He completed a Master of Fine Arts at Tama Art University, Tokyo, lectured for six years at Tokyo’s Musashino Art University and held guest lecturing residencies at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China; Australian National University, Canberra; Lafayette College, Pennsylvania, USA and the Joan Miro Foundation, Spain.
