Art, like life, is full of surprises. NGV conservators, as the scientists and carers of the NGV Collection, share behind-the-scenes insights into discoveries revealed in their treatment of artworks, adding to the rich histories of art and design objects.

In this program, conservator Carl Villis shares how the first major conservation treatment in 70 years of El Greco’s sixteenth-century painting Portrait of a cardinal, provides opportunity to find clues to some lingering, century-old questions about the portrait.

This program will be presented online.
