The cyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process that produces a distinctive blue-toned image. First invented in the mid-nineteenth century, the cyanotype captures light and shadow through a simple exposure to sunlight or UV light, which is why the process is also referred to as sun printing.

With its rich cyan tones and simple charm, the cyanotype remains a beloved method of image-making, one that artists around the world continue to explore and reinvent.

In this one-day course, developed with and facilitated by multidisciplinary artist Emma “Ruby” Armstrong-Porter, participants will learn about cyanotype photographic printing techniques, before applying them to the creation of their own unique prints to take home.

About the artist

Emma “Ruby” Armstrong-Porter is an emerging multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on printmaking and chemistry-based photographic techniques. Often employing an autoethnographic perspective, their work is influenced by lived experiences of queerness, neurodivergence, mental illness and institutionalisation, with a strong interest in environmentalism and feminisms.

When is the course?

The course takes place on Saturday 14 November from 12–5pm.

What will the course involve?

In this hands-on workshop in the NGV’s Learn Studios, participants will be introduced to the cyanotype process – a photographic technique that uses sunlight or UV to create striking blue-toned prints. Guided by multidisciplinary artist Emma “Ruby” Armstrong-Porter, participants will learn how to create and compose images for cyanotype exposure, experimenting with materials and forms to produce their own unique prints.

Course enrolment includes all materials.

Suitable for all skill levels, no prior experience necessary.
