NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM in conversation with The Design Files’ Lucy Feagins

The Design Files Editor and Founder, Lucy Feagins speaks with Tony Ellwood AM about the growth of the NGV under his stewardship, and the future of art and design in Melbourne.

Tony Ellwood AM is a leading figure in the Australian arts sector and Director of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). He was formerly Director of the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), and Director of Bendigo Art Gallery.

Under Tony Ellwood’s stewardship, the National Gallery of Victoria has become the most visited gallery in Australia. He is unafraid to test boundaries, and through a series of blockbuster exhibitions has made the NGV an exciting and accessible part of the community.

Tony has been on several state and Commonwealth boards and committees, including the selection committees for the 2005 and 2009 Venice Biennales. In 2018 Tony was appointed as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to the visual arts and to the museums and galleries sector.

Lucy Feagins studied Creative Arts at the University of Melbourne. In a former life, she worked as a set dresser in the film industry, and as a stylist. Lucy has contributed to various Australian publications including Inside Out, The Age and The Saturday Paper, and is a weekly interiors columnist to Domain (Fairfax). Lucy is editor and founder of The Design Files, which started up in early 2008, and within a year it was named by The Times UK as one of the world’s Top 50 design blogs.
