Levels 7-10

Experience the diverse nature of Chinese with Cantonese and Mandarin speaking artist Scotty So. In this interactive program, find out how the history of Chinese fashion has inspired So’s work and explore Cheongsams in the NGV Collection. Through a series of engaging activities, extend your Mandarin language skills and get creative designing your own Cheongsam.

This virtual session will be delivered primarily in English and is suitable for Chinese learners of all levels.

Learning Objectives 

  • Outline the development of Cheongsam and Qipao in Chinese fashion history with artist Scotty So.
  • Compare and contrast different Cheongsams/Qipao from the NGV Collection in Mandarin
  • Design a Cheongsam and describe it in Mandarin by using sentences that contain two or more ideas connected by cohesive devices such as 不但…而且… and 因为… 所以…
  • Recognise the diverse nature of the Chinese language used and spoken locally and globally

About the artist

Scotty So is a Melbourne based artist from Hong Kong. He works across diverse media, including painting, photography, video and drag performance. Often humorous in nature, his work draws from cultural traditions, historical and contemporary fashion and ideas around identity. So’s work has been displayed in Hong Kong, Greater China, Australia and most recently in the NGV Triennial.

This program is part of Creative Catalyst, a program for high ability students attending Victorian Government schools.
