Experience the diverse nature of Chinese culture with Cantonese and Mandarin speaking artist Scotty So. In this interactive program, explore cheongsam and qipao – traditional Chinese dress styles – from the NGV Collection and find out how the history of Chinese fashion has inspired So’s work.

Through a series of engaging activities, extend your Mandarin language skills and get creative designing your own cheongsam. This program will be delivered primarily in English and is suitable for Chinese learners of all levels.

Learning Objectives

  • Create a cheongsam design as guided by artist Scotty So.
  • Compare and contrast different cheongsams / qipao from the NGV Collection and identify their development in Chinese fashion history.
  • Identify and apply features of Chinese grammar and sentence structure to create short oral and written texts.

This program is part of Creative Catalyst, a program for high ability students attending Victorian Government schools.
