As a Member, we invite you to this special preview of the 2020 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition Pierre Bonnard, developed in partnership with the Musée d’Orsay, Paris and featuring works spanning the late 19th and first half of the 20th century.
One of the most beloved painters of the 20th century, Pierre Bonnard is still celebrated for his use of colour to convey emotion. Through this showcase of paintings, drawings, photographs, folding screens and early cinema, Pierre Bonnard brings modern France to life with startling beauty and vivid colour.
The NGV has commissioned award-winning Iranian Paris-based designer India Mahdavi to design the exhibition’s scenography. Engaging with both art history and contemporary culture, Mahdavi frames Pierre Bonnard’s works among wall and floor applications, as well as furniture, bringing to life the sumptuous, domestic interior worlds Bonnard became synonymous for.
Before attending the preview, learn about the significant role that Pierre Bonnard played in the development of modern French art and the way India Mahdavi has responded to this through the exhibition design in a Members Exhibition Introduction with NGV curator Dr Ted Gott at 1pm, prior to the preview commencing at 2pm. The Members Exhibition Introduction will repeat on Saturday 6 June, 11am with NGV Curator Dr Miranda Wallace.
Separate ticket required for preview and talk.
