Hear how Kyoko creates artworks filled with unexpected meanings and imaginative details. Then, embark on a journey through the Gallery to discover hidden symbols and stories in artworks from across history before returning to the NGV Studios to get creative! Inspired by Kyoko’s practice, and the artworks encountered in the Gallery, create your own mysterious still life, filled with symbols and stories waiting to be discovered.
About NGV Creativity Club
NGV Creativity Club is a series of targeted masterclasses for high achieving students in Years 4–10. Offered during school holidays at the NGV the programs will be led by industry professionals including visual artists, writers and designers. These targeted programs will give students access to opportunities to develop technical skills and extend their creative talents beyond the classroom.
NGV Creativity Club is funded by the Department of Education as part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series. The masterclasses are offered exclusively to Victorian Government School students who are achieving above standard level in a relevant subject area (e.g. Visual Arts, English).
Kyoko Imazu is a Japanese artist based in Melbourne, whose practice encompasses a range of mediums such as printmaking, papercut, puppetry and installation, bookbinding and ceramics.
Her work tells the stories of our often-overlooked neighbors like the weeds, bugs and pebbles that fill our everyday lives. Upon closer inspection, every petal, leaf and wing is miraculously unique; they all have their own stories and universes within themselves, containing many states of life, death and regeneration. She combines her own memories with the stories of these tiny neighbors to try to make sense of the world we live in and imagine the worlds we cannot see with our own eyes.
Her works are held in collections at various public institutions such as National Library of Australia, State Library of Queensland, State Library of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia as well as numerous private collections worldwide.
Information for parents and guardians
- Once booked, a parent or guardian will be required to complete an additional registration form. This form will be sent by email.
- NGV Creativity Club programs are supervised by NGV Learn staff so parents are not required to attend the session, unless acting as a companion with a valid government issued Companion Card.
- Please ensure students bring a packed lunch, snacks, and water bottle.
- Parents and carers may be eligible to receive assistance with transport costs if they will be travelling from outside the Metropolitan Melbourne train network.
