The inaugural MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission by Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao platforms design and architecture as a powerful cultural medium.
In a unique opportunity, Tatiana Bilbao and the NGV invite members of the community to contribute to a textile collage that forms an integral part of Bilbao’s new large-scale installation La ropa sucia se lava en casa (Dirty clothes are washed at home), 2022, in an intimate workshop hosted by Tatiana.
Promoting conversation and reflection on the conditions of domestic work in contemporary society, Tatiana asks participants to contribute an article of clothing, a piece of fabric, or a textile that represents someone they have cared for or who has cared for them. Each piece of fabric, embedded with its own history of care, forms a catalyst for sharing stories, anecdotes and experiences and will be stitched together to become part of the MECCA x NGV Women in Design | Tatiana Bilbao exhibition, opening on 6 October.
Workshop Outline
3–3:20pm: Introduction by Tatiana Bilbao
3:20–4:20pm: Design and assembly of fabric for the textile collage
4:20–5pm: Group presentation, sharing of stories and assembled textile designs
The commission of this work is made possible through the MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission, which annually, over five years, invites a leading female designer or architect to produce a work for the NGV Collection.
