Ground Level

Are you an international student interested in exploring local art and culture, practicing conversational English, and meeting new people?

We would love to see you at NGV Language Exchange at the National Gallery of Victoria. Join educators at the Gallery each month for conversations about art and design from Australia and around the world, and creative artmaking activities.

All levels of English are welcome, and no prior art knowledge or experience is required.

The NGV is filled with art and design that offers fascinating insights into the diversity of global cultures. Join us at NGV International this week for conversations about customs, traditions and stories inspired by art from around the world and share your own experiences. This session also includes an artmaking activity delivered by Melbourne-based artist Olana Janfa. Come along and create a unique artwork that reflects your own culture or a special tradition.

About Olana Janfa
Olana Janfa is a self-taught artist based in Melbourne. Born in Ethiopia, Olana migrated to Norway as a teenager and has lived in Australia since 2015. Known for his uniquely expressive style, bold use of colour and often-humorous narrative captions, Olana has established his name as a compelling and prolific creator whose art playfully reflects nuances of pop culture, politics and identity. Along with his studio practice, Olana works on large-scale mural projects, fashion collaborations, brand identity, book illustration and other commercial projects. He has exhibited his work in galleries across Melbourne, and his work can be found in private collections around the world.
