What makes a great artist? Is it ingenuity and innovation? Resistance and rebellion? Mastery of skill and technique? The ability to see what others might overlook?
In this online course developed by NGV specialists, you will learn about the ideas, techniques and unique circumstances that enabled some of the world’s greatest artists to rise to the fore as creative leaders of their time. While some gained widespread respect and notoriety in their own time, the work and contribution of other artists is lesser known, yet their impact equally significant.
Through close examination of ten artists from the NGV Collection, curated for their unique, important and sometimes less visible contributions to art history, you will be able to develop or expand upon knowledge of art history and socio-cultural histories, while developing and refining skills in close looking, visual analysis and interpretation, and critical thinking.
Artists covered within the 10 Artists You Should Know Course include:
- Emily Kam Kngwarray
- Suzanne Valadon
- Francis Bacon
- Katsushika Hokusai
- Bhupen Khakhar
- Berthe Morisot
- Lavinia Fontana
