LET’S TALK ABOUT QUEER

Take a journey into queer culture and community through a series of discussions exploring how and why the language used by and in reference to queer and LGBTQ+ communities has developed over time. This five-part series will explore the importance of language within queer communities, through the lenses of art, literature, history, culture and community building.

In this session, NGV curator Dr Angela Hesson and guest panellist Professor Clara Tuite will discuss the possibilities and challenges of queering historical literature.

Speakers

Dr Angela HessonCurator, Australian Painting, Sculpture and Decorative Arts to 1980, NGV.

Professor Clara Tuite Teaches Romanticism, decadent literature and the history of the novel at the University of Melbourne, where she is also a Co-Director of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Contemporary Culture research unit. She is the author of Romantic Austen: Sexual Politics and the Literary Canon (Cambridge University Press, 2002), Lord Byron and Scandalous Celebrity (Cambridge University Press, 2015) and, with Claudia L. Johnson, 30 Great Myths About Jane Austen (Wiley-Blackwell, 2020).
