Waumer, pirates of the air

Torres Strait Islanders are intimately connected to the winds that blow through the Torres Strait. Jimmy J. Thaiday expresses the important role of waumer birds in understanding these changes to the weather through his work Waumer, pirates of the air, 2015. This week, explore this work and others depicting animals in Big Weather; an exhibition which explores Indigenous cultural knowledge and understanding of Country, weather systems and the land on which we live.

Learning objectives

  • Discuss and analyse the ways in which Jimmy J. Thaiday has conveyed cultural knowledge, concepts and ideas about animals and their connection to the environment
  • Discuss how choice of materials and application of techniques communicate meaning
  • Describe the way the art is displayed and how this enhances the meaning of the artwork

Duration: 15 mins
