Shell matching game, Kai-awase

Kai-awase is a Japanese ‘shell matching’ game. This unique and contemporary example is the only complete set known to be in existence, featuring 720 gilded clam-shaped shells decorated with hand-painted Japanese and Australian flowers. It is on display in the exhibition Golden shells and the gentle mastery of Japanese lacquer, which celebrates the beauty and the artistry of this distinctive craft.
