Unit 3 – SAT 1 – Criterion 1 –

Use of an exploration proposal to define the development of an individual design process that includes a plan of how the proposal will be undertaken

In his exploration proposal Jack has been able to provide detailed evidence of how he wants to develop his design process. He has described the focus and subject matter he will explore throughout his design process: “Overcoming Adversity” and how people do this. Jack has included personal imagery as part of his proposal to show the kind of work that he would like to make and to show how colour creates different moods and feelings within artworks. Jack describes how he wants to use the environment to explore emotions and review his own personal experiences.

Jack has comprehensively described how he will use art elements to enhance the aesthetic qualities within his work. He uses sophisticated language to describe how he intends to do this. He also includes discussion of the various materials and techniques and their application.

The focus and subject matter are clearly defined and discussed and possibilities are explored. Jack discusses his inspiration and how this will inform his art making.

An articulate plan is developed that clearly demonstrates how the individual design process will be developed. Jack has outlined his plan in stages. This may vary from student to student: some students may prefer to outline their plan in a table divided into weeks; others may do it in stages or steps. There is no right or wrong way.

Students also find it very helpful to create mind maps it gives an overview of their exploration thoughts and process. It also allows them to go back and reflect on “where to next?”

Jack’s proposal shows further research on artists that work in similar subject matter, materials and techniques and how this helps to inform the design process. He discusses the artist’s use of shape and tone and how ideas are communicated.

Jack does further research on his overall theme to try to get deeper understanding.

Jack is exploring how colour can indicate different emotions in people – he is also indicating how he intends to use it in his work. His annotation demonstrates comprehensive and thoughtful exploration that progressively develops and refines ideas and subject matter in a personal way.

Jack goes on to show how he is using watercolour and different amounts of water in his application to achieve the desired effect.

Annotation shows highly detailed investigation of sources of inspiration and motivation, including documentary evidence of the development of personal imagery. Jack goes on to develop his own personal imagery, to be used as part of his process – focusing on the time of day the images were taken and also the way light is reflected to intensify the colours.

Throughout his folio Jack discusses his materials, techniques and processes. In this image he is outlining the different pastels he is using to gain different tints to his colours.

Jack provides extensive discussion of his pastel application and his desire to create expressive qualities. There is also discussion of the way he blended colours using a limited palette and then added an extra colour – blue – to create tonal variation. He felt that this was not successful and this is all clearly documented.

A strong cohesive relationship between the artworks is evident, illustrating consistency in related concepts. Jack makes links in his work through his overall theme of “Overcoming Adversity”, using colour to create emotions.

In his evaluation documentation Jack discusses that his works link through their aesthetic qualities and also through how they are displayed – using the same mounting and framing to help the cohesiveness of the works. There are also suggestions as to how they should be displayed. Finished art works are clearly linked through highly effective use of strong consistent aesthetic qualities and use of materials and techniques.
