A film noir thriller directed by Henry Hathaway, Niagara elevated Marilyn Monroe to star status in 1953, preceding the success of her next two films – Gentleman Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. The star’s publicity still for the film was also the basis for Andy Warhol’s series of silk screens of Marilyn Monroe, made following her death in 1962.
Niagara follows two couples visiting Niagara Falls – George and Rose Loomis, and Ray and Polly Cutler. Tension builds between the foursome as it becomes clear that one couple is not as happy as they seem. Also starring Joseph Cotten, Jean Peters, and Max Showalter, Niagara was one of the biggest box office hits of 1953 for 20th Century Fox and sees Monroe play the seductive role of the femme fatale.
