About this work

The Napoleonic Wars inspired many clothing trends that continued into the 1820s. The pelisse was an outer garment said to have originated from the uniform of the Napoleonic hussars, light cavalrymen who wore short jackets decorated with rows of braiding and buttons. Most commonly, the term pelisse refers to examples like this one in silk. These garments resemble a second dress, covering all but the hem of the underdress.
