About this work
This work is based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens that was first adapted for the print medium by Paulus Pontius around 1640–58. Located in his own tomb chapel at St Jacob’s Church in Antwerp, Rubens’ painting depicts the Virgin and Child flanked by saints. St Jerome is seated on a lion in the foreground, while St Bonaventure kneels to the left and St George – bearing Rubens’ likeness – waves a flag to the right. In this later engraving by an unknown artist, Rubens’ composition has been reversed and St George, along with several other ancillary details, has been omitted.
