About this work
The sitter in this portrait, the Rt Hon. Charles Wolfran Cornewall, was born in 1735 at Berrington, Herefordshire. Cornewall was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn, but soon retired from professional life. He was a Member of Parliament from 1768, Lord Treasurer 1774–80, Chief Justice and Privy Councillor in 1780, and Speaker of the House of Commons until his death in 1789.
