About this work

An etiquette book of the era advised that a lady must be aware of her gloves and shoes, as they were the foremost indicators of her class. If she was unaware of this, or could not afford the proper accessories, she could not be considered a lady. Fabrics other than kid were considered vulgar and an indictor that the wearer was of the lower classes.
