About this work

This brush holder is decorated in two different tones of gold and black ink. It depicts a hunting party emerging from a pine forest, the tops of the standards from the standard bearers just visible behind the hunter. In China, brush holders were one of the main implements for calligraphy found on a scholar’s desk, which might also include brushes, ink sticks, an ink stone, paper weights and water droppers.
