Q&A with Courtney Barnett

Describe your sound in 5 words or less?

Like eating an orange whole.

If your music was an artwork what would it look like?

My Bed by Tracy Emin.

Who’s your favourite artist/artwork?

Anything and everything by Reg Mombassa, Brett Whitelely, Celeste Potter, Douglas E. Pope, Ken Done, Nan Goldin and David Hockney.

What’s your favourite gig you have played to date?

Performing the entire INXS album Kick for Pure Pop Records classic albums series. Trying to interpret the power of 80s synth pop through one guitar and a loop pedal. I’ve never been more terrified.

What inspires/influences your music the most?

I’m inspired by the mundane and the extraordinary.

What song do you wish you wrote?

Every Wilco song. And Perfect Day by Lou Reed. Actually every Lou Reed song as well.

What part of making music excites you the most?

The part where you hate yourself and think you’re not good enough for anyone or anything and want to give up and become a banker and then suddenly you realise you don’t need to impress anyone but yourself and you have a break-through. That happens once a week so I’m constantly excited.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

An honest performance and maybe a few broken strings.

Tell us about the last song you wrote?

It’s called Depreston and it’s a story about real estate and sympathetic senility.
