Folio: Sophie Tanner – VCE Art


Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 1 –

Exploration of personal responses, ideas and concepts throughout artistic practice.

Sophie has commenced her artistic practice by engaging in research and brainstorming. Here we can see her thinking playing out both visually and in written form. Prior to starting her personal exploration, she has attended exhibitions and included some of the works that resonated with her in her research.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 1 –

Exploration of personal responses, ideas and concepts throughout artistic practice.

The exploration of personal responses includes artistic influence and inspiration. Sophie has included amongst others, this study of Chuck Close. Here she has replicated and explored techniques and compositional constructs used by Close. This helped to better understand the directions she would apply in her own art practice.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 2 –

Experimentation with materials, techniques, processes and art forms, relevant to personal ideas and concepts, throughout the art process.

Sophie is experimenting with a variety of materials, techniques and processes now that she has developed her thinking around her personal ideas and concepts. She extends on her earlier studies from artistic influence and applies these to her own ideas.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 2 –

Experimentation with materials, techniques, processes and art forms, relevant to personal ideas and concepts, throughout the art process.

The selected artforms are being supported by compositional trials. Sophie has taken her own photographs to help develop her visual language and communicate her ideas. She continues to experiment with multiple two-dimensional art forms.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 3 –

Use of Analytical Frameworks that reflects the exploration and development of artworks through artistic practice.

Sophie has elected to use a colour key to highlight her selected analytical frameworks. This helps her, and assessors, to quickly identify her application of the frameworks in the development of her thinking and working throughout her artistic practice.

Use of Analytical Frameworks that reflects the exploration and development of artworks through artistic practice.

Throughout the Art Process Sophie uses the Analytical Frameworks to explore and reflect on the development of her personal concepts. Sophie has highlighted sections of text to indicate which framework supports her annotation.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 4 –

Use of visual language to develop artworks relevant to the student’s intentions.

Throughout the art process Sophie explores visual language in a variety of responses in the development and refinement of her personal concepts. Here she has used photography to trial compositions.

Sophie is demonstrating her understanding of visual language through the experimentation, development and refinement of materials, techniques and processes. Through visual and written documentation, she discusses the links between her intentions and the progression of her artwork.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Refinement and resolution of personal ideas in the art process and finished artwork/s.

The finished artwork, alongside Sophie’s art process, demonstrate refinement in her application of skill and the refinement and resolution of her personal ideas and concepts in all stages of the art process.

Refinement and resolution of personal ideas in the art process and finished artwork/s.

Sophie’s final work for Unit 3 resolves her personal ideas from the beginning of her art practice.

Unit 4 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Exploration, investigation and experimentation of materials, techniques and processes relevant to personal concepts and ideas in Unit 4.

At the beginning of Unit 4 Sophie has indicated where she concluded in Unit 3. She has provided clear links to her thoughts and previous inspiration. She discusses where to next and starts to further explore how she can progress and refine her ideas, materials, techniques and processes.

Unit 4 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 7 –

Use artistic practice to refine and realise concepts in the body of work and finished artwork(s).

Throughout her artistic practice Sophie has consistently applied critical and creative thinking, both visually and in written form, to realise her personal concepts. Her visual diary supports her thinking and the culmination of her final artworks. She produced two final artworks in the realisation of her personal exploration.

Unit 4 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 8 –

Manipulation of visual language and technical qualities to explore, develop, refine and resolve personal ideas and visual imagery throughout Unit 4.

Again, in Unit 4, Sophie uses photography to help construct her compositions and develop her visual language. Throughout her art process she consistently explores, develops and refines her imagery progressing towards her finished works.

Unit 4 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 9 –

Resolution of skills, ideas and personal concepts evident in Unit 4 finished artwork/s.

Sophie evaluates, reflects and demonstrates an understanding of her own art practice in resolving her finished artworks. She considers the aesthetic decisions she has made and the application of materials and techniques.

Unit 4 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 9 –

Resolution of skills, ideas and personal concepts evident in Unit 4 finished artwork/s.

Here is one of two finished artworks that resolves Sophie’s personal exploration on the fast pace of contemporary life. She wanted to encourage her viewers to become more aware of their surroundings and explore the intensity that resides in unremarkable moments.

Unit 4 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 10 –

Use of the Analytical Frameworks in reflective and evaluative annotations throughout Unit 4.

Sophie has consistently applied the use of the analytical frameworks and art terminology in Unit 4 to evaluate, reflect upon, and justify her decisions and ideas. She continued to use the colour code set out in Unit 3. Her selection of the frameworks were relevant and comprehensive with all frameworks applied throughout the art process.
