Ground Level

NGV Friday Nights returns this winter with exclusive late night access to MoMA at NGV. Featuring a line-up of international and home-grown acts presented by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, experience art, music and dining inspired by the city that never sleeps.

7–7.45pm & 8.45–9.30pm

Chris McNulty owes much of her success to New York, the city she called home for several decades, and where she released eight critically acclaimed albums, performing and recording with a list of who’s who in jazz. Following her ground-breaking release Eternal, a chamber ensemble collaboration with Australian orchestrator, Steve Newcomb, Chris relocated back to Australia in early 2016 and toured her Eternal Chamber Ensemble project Australia-wide including performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre, the Perth International Jazz Festival, Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival and Stonnington Jazz Festival. If you’re looking for a taste of NYC jazz, no other vocalist in Australia with McNulty’s experience comes close. As Peter Quinn from Jazz Wise wrote: ‘Her liquid phrasing and luminous tone underscores a voice of serene beauty, striking veracity and compelling emotional fervency’. McNulty weaves her magic on songs as diverse as Jitterbug Waltz and How Are Things in Glocca Morra. Swings with the best of them on How Little We Know and mesmerises audiences with her trance-like renditions of tunes such as Meaning of the Blues. A rare and not to be missed performance, Chris McNulty will be joined by a stellar trio featuring Chris’ close colleague, awarding winning, drummer extraordinaire, Daniel Susnjar.

Angus and Harriett
6–7pm and 7.45–8.45pm

Angus Gray is an instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, producer and arranger based in Melbourne. His piano skills are highly sought after on the jazz, funk, and blues music scene, and he is a recipient of the Will Poskitt Piano Scholarship and Lionel Gell Foundation Scholarship for Jazz and Improvisation at The University of Melbourne. Harriett Allcroft is an Australian vocalist and composer, known for her mesmerising yet light-hearted style. Originally from Adelaide and now based in Melbourne, Harriett performs original contemporary jazz and re-arrangements of Australian jazz tunes with her trademark playfulness and whimsy.
