Passage: The Art of Atong Atem presents the first major solo exhibition by Melbourne-based South Sudanese artist Atong Atem in Australia. Working across portrait photography, Atem creates striking images that draw together performance, fashion, design and storytelling to reflect on identity, migration and belonging.
Rich in colour, symbolism and texture, Atem’s photographs reference African studio photography traditions while centering personal and community histories often absent from mainstream representations of art history. Her works consider how photography can shape ideas about visibility, memory and self-representation, while also responding to experiences of diaspora, resilience and cultural continuity.
